Grammar C1 - Cleft sentences (What I believe is..

Cleft sentences are used to emphasize a specific part of a sentence. In English, they allow you to highlight or draw attention to one element, such as a subject, object, or adverbial phrase.

There are two types of cleft sentences commonly used:

It-clefts:

Structure: It is/was + emphasized part + that/who + rest of the sentence.

Example: It was John who broke the window.

In this sentence, the emphasis is placed on John, the person who broke the window.

What-clefts:

Structure: What + noun clause + is/was + emphasized part.

Example:  What I really want is to go on holiday.

Here, the emphasis is placed on the entire clause "to go on holiday."
