Grammar B2 - Mixed Condittionals for hypotherical situations
![]()
Mixed conditionals are used when the condition and the result refer to different times. The most common types of mixed conditionals combine the second conditional (which is used for hypothetical situations in the present or future) and the third conditional (which is used for hypothetical situations in the past).
1. Type 3 Condition + Type 2 Result
This structure is used to talk about a hypothetical past situation and its present consequence.
Structure: If + past perfect, would + base verb
Example: If I had studied harder, I would be a doctor now.
Explanation: (The condition refers to a past event (studied harder), and the result refers to the present (being a doctor).)
2. Type 2 Condition + Type 3 Result
This structure is used to talk about a present hypothetical situation and its hypothetical past consequence.
Structure: If + past simple, would have + past participle
Example: If I lived in New York, I would have visited the Statue of Liberty by now.
Explanations: (The condition refers to the present (living in New York), and the result refers to the past (visited the Statue of Liberty).)
