Grammar C1 - Using nominalization for formalities
![]()
Nominalization is a grammatical process in which verbs (actions) or adjectives (descriptions) are turned into nouns. This is a common feature in formal writing, as it allows for more concise and impersonal language. Nominalization often helps to emphasize the action or idea rather than the person performing the action.
For example:
Verb to Noun:
Verb: "She decided to implement a new policy."
Nominalization: "The decision to implement a new policy."
Adjective to Noun:
Adjective: "He is responsible for the project."
Nominalization: "His responsibility for the project."
Common Nominalizations:
To decide → decision
To propose → proposal
To implement → implementation
To investigate → investigation
To analyze → analysis
To develop → development
To manage → management
To manage → management
In formal writing, nominalization allows for a more objective tone, focusing on the process or outcome, rather than the individual performing the action.
