Cleft sentences are used to emphasize a specific part of a sentence. In English, they allow you to highlight or draw attention to one element, such as a subject, object, or adverbial phrase.
There are two types of cleft sentences commonly used:
It-clefts:
Structure: It is/was + emphasized part + that/who + rest of the sentence.
Example: It was John who broke the window.
In this sentence, the emphasis is placed on John, the person who broke the window.
What-clefts:
Structure: What + noun clause + is/was + emphasized part.
Example: What I really want is to go on holiday.
Here, the emphasis is placed on the entire clause "to go on holiday."
