Grammar A2 - Gerunds after verbs
![]()
A gerund is the -ing form of a verb that functions as a noun in a sentence. Certain verbs are followed by gerunds, meaning they are used to describe activities or actions.
Some common verbs followed by gerunds include:
Enjoy
Example: I enjoy swimming in the pool. (I like swimming as an activity.)
Like
Example: She likes reading books. (She enjoys the activity of reading.)
Hate
Example: They hate waiting for the bus. (They dislike the activity of waiting.)
Stop
Example: We stopped playing because it was raining. (We finished the activity of playing.)
Prefer
Example: I prefer watching movies at home. (I like the activity of watching movies more than other options.)
Important note: Not all verbs are followed by gerunds. For example, verbs like "want" and "need" are followed by the base form of the verb, not the gerund.
